Overview
Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped
image format
that employs lossless data compression
. PNG was created to improve upon and replace GIF
(Graphics Interchange Format) as an image-file format not requiring a patent
license. It is pronounced /ˈpɪŋ/
[a] ping
, or pee-en-jee
. PNG supports palette-based (palettes of 24-bit RGB
or 32-bit RGBA
colors), greyscale
, greyscale with alpha
, RGB, or RGBA images. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for print graphics, and so does not support non-RGB color spaces
(such as CMYK
). [1]
In computing, JPEG (pronounced ˈdʒeɪpɛɡ
, jay-peg
) is a commonly used method of lossy compression
for photographic images. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats
. JPEG/Exif
is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices. [2]
JPEG 2000 is an image compression
standard and coding system. It was created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group
committee in 2000 with the intention of superseding their original discrete cosine transform
-based JPEG standard (created in 1992) with a newly designed, wavelet
-based method. The standardized filename extension
is .jp2 for ISO
/IEC
15444-1 conforming files and .jpx for the extended part-2 specifications, published as ISO/IEC 15444-2.[3][4]
